Film Scoring!!!

The Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program is now accepting
submissions of student made films for free original scores.

For the last 12 years the students of the PNWFS program have composed
and recorded original scores for films submitted by student film
makers from film programs all across the US. To date the program has
supplied original scores to over 100 student films in all genres -
rock, jazz, classical, ethnic, etc. - and with a wide variety of
instrumentation/ensembles/orchestras as large as 52 musicians. We
have scored animated, live action and documentary films from many
schools including Bellevue Community College, University of
Washington, Seattle Film Institute, Savannah College of Art and
Design, The Brooks Institute, Chapman University, Seattle Central
Community College, Evergreen State College, the NW Film Center in
Portland, Vanarts (Vancouver) and Eastern Washington University.

This service is offered for free to student film makers - it is the
final step in the education of the students of the PNWFS program - to
use the skills that they have learned during a 2 year educational
program and apply them to an actual film. The music is licensed to
the film makers free of charge for use within their films in any and
all media and for promotional use (trailers, etc.) in connection to
those films. The music remains the property of the composers and the
PNWFS program.

WE DO NOT ACCEPT ANY PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTIONS - the submitted films
must have been made as part of an educational program.

If you have a completed film (locked by the time you submit it to us)
and are interested in submitting your film for consideration. Please
get in touch with me and I can send you submission instructions. Our
schedule is that submissions received by the middle of January, 2010
(and accepted by the program) will be scored in a recording session
in late spring/early summer. You will work directly with the film
composers and have creative control of the process - the student
composers will be working under the supervision of PNWFS faculty.

For additional details about the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring
Program and to hear samples of some previous student's scores, please
visit our website at:
http://www.pnwfilmmusic.com

Please circulate this e-mail to any student film makers that you know
who may be interested in this unique opportunity.

Angry Filmmaker Visits UCF!

Angry Filmmaker Visits UCF

Kelley Baker, aka "The Angry Filmmaker" made UCF a stop on his national tour for the first time this week, speaking to Rich Grula's sound design class and Dr. Mills' graduate seminar.  Baker holds a BA and MFA from USC and has directed several independent feature films and documentaries.  He was the sound designer on six of Gus Van Sant’s feature films including, MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO, GOOD WILL HUNTING, and FINDING FORRESTER. He also designed the sound on Todd Haynes feature film, FAR FROM HEAVEN.

Baker warned students against going into debt to make their films and offered advice on how to get people to work for free.  "Be nice, be respectful, and feed them well," he told MFA students Wednesday night.  "Build relationships.  It's one of the most important things you can do."

"Baker was exactly the kind of energetic and inspirational cheerleader of this paradigm that grad students have wanted to hear," said MFA student Andrew Gay.

Baker tours universities and high schools every fall, living out of his van with his chocolate lab Moses.  For more information, go to www. angryfilmmaker.com.

FILM CONTEST

FILM CONTEST!
World Food Programme, Washington D.C

The contest is a joint project by the World Food Program and YouTube, and
the videos be showcased on our website and YouTube pages, which both have
international reach. The winners will be chosen by a panel of celebrity
judges - so this is also a great opportunity for students to have their
work seen by major players in the industry. Last year's judges included
leaders in film, web and humanitarian aid, including Edward Zwick, Director
of “Blood Diamond” and “The Last Samurai,” Oscar-winning producer Cathy
Schulman (“Crash,” “Darfur Now,” “The Illusionist”) and Steve Grove, head
of YouTube News and Politics. The winners were sent to Ethiopia to see a
project first hand and film with WFP.

We are looking for 30-60 sec spots that highlight the issue of hunger.
We’re looking for the edgy and provocative videos about hunger; whatever it
takes to make people think and to change attitudes. Film, stills, montage,
animation – anything goes!

We begin accepting submissions on October 16th - World Food Day - and the
competition ends December 31. For more information and to see past winners,
check out www.wfp.org/hungerbytes.  This year, the world has reached an
historic milestone with more than a billion people, or one in six people on
this planet, going to bed hungry. Hunger Bytes is one action among many
under WFP’s Billion for Billion Campaign, which focuses on engaging the 1.6
billion online users to step up and help the billion hungry people in the
world.

WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency and the UN’s frontline
agency for hunger solutions. In 2009, WFP aims to feed 108 million people
in 74 countries. We receive no UN dues and have a 7% overhead. We don't
have a huge PR team or hire out firms to do our marketing, so we rely on
partnerships and creativity to help us get the word out – and that’s where
motivated, creative students can make a big difference raising awareness,
while showcasing their own talent.

Andy Warhol's “Chelsea Girls” next Monday

There will be screening of Andy Warhol's “Chelsea Girls” next Monday, September 28th, in the Communications Building Room 145 at 7:00 PM.

This is a rare opportunity to see a film that is currently unavailable in the United States outside of the occasional Museum and Art Gallery. If you are not aware, Chelsea Girls is Andy Warhol's American underground classic from 1967 and is often regarded as one of the best films of the 20th century. The Student Cinematheque is a student-run organization, that creates an open forum for academic exploration and discussion of audio/visual media.
