Fest Update: Cat's Bad Hair Day To Screen At Le Femme Film Festival

Happy to report that Cat's Bad Hair Day (Debby Wolfe UCF FILM 2004) has been accepted for screening at the LA Femme Film Festival in Los Angeles. Here's what the acceptance letter looked like.

Dear Ms. Wolfe,
After a very long judging process, the LA Femme Film Festival Selection Committee and Festival Director, Leslie LaPage, has concluded the programming for the 2005 festival. We would like to welcome you and your film entitled "Cat's Bad Hair Day" to screen at the LA Femme Film Festival May 27th-29th.

Next week you will be receiving from our office a screening time for your film. Please let us know how many "VIP All Access Passes" you will need for you and your crew to attend the "Kick Off Party" on May 26th, the Seminars on May 27th, the Parties, and the Festival.

The screening venue for the festival is the Beaudry Theater located at the LA Center Studios 450 S. Bixel St. Los Angeles 90017, which is our host for this year's festival.

Strangely, UCF FILM went zero for five in the Jacksonville Film Festival (Jacksonville??? Jeeze, we gotta check what they accepted!) We'll look to crack that nut next year.

Screenings & Summer Recap

For those of you still asking questions, let's repeat this information. First the schedule of UCF FILM student screenings is as follows:
  1. Directing 1 (Ingle) Thursday, April 28, 8pm, VAB Auditorium 132
  2. Directing 3 (Wolfe), Friday, April 29, 8pm, VAB Auditorium 132
  3. Directing 1 (Stoeckl), Saturday, April 30, 3pm, VAB Auditorium 132
  4. Capstone, Saturday April 30, 7pm, VAB Auditorium 132
We'd also like to point out that Dr. Mary Johnson will be leading a presentation of student screenplays on Sunday, May 1, 3pm at DMAC.

As for the Summer Schedule for UCF FILM, the Equipment Room is already closed and will remain so until the start of the Fall Semester, except for Chris Harris' Intermediate/Experimental Production Class.

The Post Facility will close April 29 at 5PM and reopen to all current students on Monday, May 2 through May 31. The hours of operation in May will be 9 - 5, Monday through Friday (no weekends, no nights). If you need to clean up your project in some way, this is the time to do it. The Post Facility will then close June 1 and remain closed for upgrades and repairs until the start of the Fall Semester.

If you wish to use the Post Facility in May, you will need to get your card re-certified by Art C.

BTW - regarding lockers. Technically, all lockers must be emptied by May 5. However, if you currently have a locker and plan to work in the Post Facility during May, you are welcome to keep your locker until May 31.

Okay, that covers it, right? Now if I could just make sure everyone reads this we'd be in business.

Gorsky Sightings

From the official world debut of An Evening With Ivan Gorsky, director Joe Mauceri and editor Taylor Marr pose for pics at MethodFest.

A little Googling this evening led me to another interesting Gorsky mention at The Horror Channel. Check out the end of this review's first paragraph:

"Time hasn’t been particularly kind to the vampire subgenre. From their auspicious beginnings as Nosferatu and Dracula, vampires in film nowadays have two choices: Go the Goth route ala Interview with the Vampire and its bastardized sister Queen of the Dammed, or become an action figure and forego biting for fighting as seen in the Blade series and most recently in Underworld. I’d just about given up hope of my beloved vamps returning to their nasty, bloodsucking ways in film – save for a few choice shorts that have crossed my path like Blood Shot and An Evening with Ivan Gorsky – until I watched Strange Things Happen at Sundown, an Insane-O-Rama production directed by Marc Fratto in his feature film debut."

Sweet!

Palm Beach Film Fest Update

A few weeks ago, we told you how UCF films took first, second and third place at the Palm Beach Film Festival, although we didn't know which films landed where. Well, the results are now final. In the University Division of the West Palm Beach International Film Festival Student Competition, the results were:
  • 1st Place - AN EVENING WITH IVAN GORSKY, directed by Joe Mauceri (UCF FILM 2004)
  • 2nd Place - CAT'S BAD HAIR DAY, directed by Debby Wolfe (UCF FILM 2004)
  • 3rd Place - AUTOMATED ASSETS, directed by James Dastoli (UCF FILM 2007)
The awards were presented during a raucous late morning awards show hosted by Clint Howard (B-Movie legend, host of the amazing CLINT HOWARD VARIETY SHOW and yes, Ron's brother). Clint was fabulous, down-to-earth and he loved the IVAN GORSKY clip. The whole event resembled a high school pep rally, as TV classes in various schools took the day off to cheer for their fellow students in the High School competition.

Despite Clint's fine style as an MC, the high point of the show came from our own Debby Wolfe as she walked through the fake fog and sliding stage door (it was a fancy show!) to accept her 2nd Place Award. Responding to a ex-Hollywood producer who during the earlier industry panel said something like Film schools are useless, that's why I'm starting my own, Deb gave a concise 30 second pitch for how great the UCF program was and how her film Cat's Bad Hair Day was going to Tribeca next week thanks to the support of her film school. She then invited everyone to consider UCF if they wanted to attend a great film school.

Jeeze! I didn't even prompt her for that. Thanks for the props, Deb! It made the seven hours of driving totally worthwhile.

Fest Update: Cat's Bad Hair Day Heads To Seattle Film Festival

This qualifies as a biggie...

Cat's Bad Hair Day, from diector Debby Wolfe (UCF FILM 2004) has been selected to screen at the 31st Seattle International Film Festival (May 19 to June 12, 2005). From the acceptance letter:

SIFF is the largest and most highly attended film festival in the United States with 175,000 attendees expected in 2005 and screens a wide selection of the best new international features and documentaries. The 25-day festival presents over 200 films from over 50 countries. With extensive local, national and international media coverage, the Festival has emerged as the country's most accessible and most highly publicized film event. SIFF is one of 6 North American Film Festivals along with Telluride, Toronto, New York, Sundance and New Directors/New Films in which a film's presentation qualifies it for the prestigious Independent Spirit Awards.

Every short film is eligible for both the Jury Competition and the Golden Space Needle Audience Award. The Jury Competition will choose a winner in both the Live Action and Animation category with cash prizes of $2500 awarded to each. The Golden Space Needle Audience Award will be given to one short film as determined by audience balloting. The winner will receive a Power Mac G5 dual drive with 2.0 GHz processor and a 23 inch Cinema Display (with VGA cord).

Thank God these folks are finally including a VGA cord with the computer. Unfortunately, the Cinema Display doesn't use a VGA cord, but whatever.

Props to Deb once again for making a film that's bringing the name UCF FILM to a national audience. And props to Seattle for giving Cat the nod.

Film Threat Kingpin Chris Gore Imbibes With UCF FILM Folks

Many of the best moments at a film festival involve an open bar. Such was the case at the recent Florida Film Festival as a well-lubricated and uber-cool Chris Gore, founder of FilmThreat.com, writer of The Ultimate Film Festival Guide and yes, even a filmmaker himself (as co-writer and co-producer of My Big Fat Independent Movie), hung out with the many UCF folks making excellent use of their filmmaker badges.

Mr. Gore was eager to meet Cat's Bad Hair Day director Debby Wolfe and promptly sucked in his cheeks in a show of filmmaker solidarity.

With cheeks still retracted, Gore greeted a near-minyan of UCF FILM folks, posing with a variety of subsets such as seen here. Also in the shot are very cool FilmThreat scribe Michael Ferraro (far right) and an FFF volunteer identified by indiewire.com as Sam Law (front and center). (ALT CAPTION FROM CHRIS GORE ON FILM THREAT: On the far left is Rich Grula of the University of Central Florida as he teaches his students the significant benefits of partying at a festival).

Ahhh...good times. Gore was a lovely guy and seemed thrilled as each UCF student told him (without prompting) that his Film Fest guide is virtually a textbook in our department. Scribe Michael said he was eager to take a look at Five Stories, so be ready for more FilmThreat reviews of UCF works coming soon.

Fest Update: Andy's Future Capstone Takes Script Award @ Ivy Film Festival

Andrew Gay wrote to inform us that the screenplay of his planned Capstone project, Melissa With A Heart Around It took first place at the IVY FILM FESTIVAL, a student fest run by Brown University.

Also, updating another of Andrew's scripts, INDIAN RIVER ORANGES, placed as a semi-finalist (top 16) in the ALL ACCESS SCREENWRITING COMPETITION and won an honorable mention" (which means it tied for third place with two other scripts) at the CAROLINA FILM AND VIDEO FESTIVAL.

Nice coverage of the event and perhaps you're included among the photo featuring UCF folks. Check it out here.

All I Did Was Die Reviewed By CULTCUTS

Scott Wilkins (UCF FILM 2004), tells us his Capstone Zombie Epic ALL I DID WAS DIE have been reviewed in From cultcuts.com. It's true, I checked. The entire review is reprinted below and it's good. Yeah Scott!

ALL I DID WAS DIE
Running time 7:25 Minutes
Directed by Scott Wilkins

Boy, can it be a pain to deliver a birthday cake to your younger brother! Especially when you get sidetracked by a horde of zombies that want your flesh! ALL I DID WAS DIE gives us a well done, rapid fire nightmarish ride on one of the dark roads of America. I was dazzled by the unique and inventive cinematography of the short. The zombies were cool, gruesome and, in one instance, pretty damned sexy. The camerawork is reminiscent of Sam Raimi's EVIL DEAD without being a copycat. ALL I DID WAS DIE is begging to be expanded to a feature. With Scott Wilkins’ ability to create a great film being revealed in this short, the feature would definitely add another feather into the hat of exceptional zombie films. – Douglas Waltz

Orlando Film Office Seeks Summer Intern

Looking for a cool industry internship this summer? The Metro Orlando Film Office is seeking a film student to intern in their Locations Division. You'll scout locations, document them and help build a database. Best of all, you'll probably go on a few location treks with major movie folks researching the area. Could be a great way to make contacts for the right person.

If you get the internship, you will need to register for an internship class at UCF.

For an interview, contact Dale Gordon, Associate Director, Locations & Permitting, Metro Orlando Film & Entertainment Commission and 407.422.7159 x216  or dale@filmorlando.com.

Good luck.

Fest Update: Incredible LMNO Robot Picked For Starz First Look Student Film Fest

The Domestiation of the Incredible LMNO Robot, directed by Ben Piety (UCF FILM 2006), has been selected for screening at the 5th Annual STARZ First Look Student Film Festival. According to the STARZ program, LMNO was "A favorite of ours, the ending is a classic!" Yeah, baby! The film is screening in the event's "Ultra-Awesome Closing Night" on April 23rd and is slotted just before West Bank Story, a USC film that is easily one of the funniest musical shorts playing the Florida Film Festival this year.

Fest Update: Ivan Gorsky Plays Chicago Horror Fest

Once again, we get the news a bit late. Hmmmm...Anyway, we're happy to report that An Evening With Ivan Gorsky, directed by Joe Mauceri (UCF FILM 2004), just played the Chicago Horror Film Festival. Next up for Joe will be renting a tux and heading to Palm Beach to accept an award for winning 1st Place in the University Category of their student competition. Nice. More details later.

FILM THREAT Gives 3.5 Stars To Cat's Bad Hair Day

Cat's Bad Hair Day, directed by Debby Wolfe (UCF FILM 2004) has received 3.5 stars from FILM THREAT, noted online media outlet for indie film coverage indie

From the review: The young Paulina Grochala delivers a surprisingly good performance; her nonverbal cues comprise the best parts of her delivery. These non-dialogue areas of the film are the strongest sections of the short and seem to contain the moments when the directing is most noticeably impressive. While the film’s story could stand to be a bit more substantial, there does seem to be a personal and earnest ring of truth to it. Aesthetically there is little to complain about as the look of the film is by far its strongest virtue.

We've done a count and it appears we have enough to go around, so let the inspiration flow!

Responding to popular demand, all Film Production students are invited to stop by Rich's office and pick up a copy of the Five Stories DVD. Own the DVD that is screening at Film Festivals around the country. Please, only one DVD per student, don't pick up for friends and if you don't want it, don't feel obligated to grab one.

End of Semester Notes

The end of the semester is coming soon, so here are a few things you need to keep in mind.
  • Film Division Spring Screenings are set for the evenings of April 28, 29 & 30 (Thursday through Saturday). They will be held in the VAB auditorium. I expect we'll have two 90 minutes screenigns each night, but that could change depending on the amount of material presented for screening.
  • Films must be turned in for screening on Wednesday, April 20th @ 5PM. Films turned in later than that time will not be screened - no exceptions. Each student is allowed to screen one project. Faculty will help decide which project you should screen.
  • All films need to be exported to a DV-NTSC Quicktime file with 48K audio (if you don't know what that means, ask someone who does). You can either bring your hard drive to Rich Grula and he will copy it or leave your Quicktime file in a special SPRING SCREENING folder that will be on the desktop of Capstone 1 (far left) or FCP 6 (near the Pro Tools Room). Label your file with your name and class (and teacher, if you're in from Directing 1), such as Dixon-Dir 1-Ingle.mov.
  • UCF FILM Production Facilities close for the summer - no equipment checkouts and no editing access. 24/7 access will end on Friday, April 29 at 5PM. For those of you who need to do some clean-up work on your projects, I plan to keep the Editing Rooms open an extra month, through May 27th, weekdays only, between 9 am and 5 pm.
Questions? Come and see me.

Festival Update: Ivan Gorsky To Play San Fernando Valley Intl Film Festival

Gosh, usually we're right up on these things, but here we're the last to know. Danny Daneau dropped a line to inform us that An Evening With Ivan Gorsky, direted by Joe Mauceri (UCF FILM 2004) is playing in the Student Competition of the The San Fernando Valley International Film Festival. Surprise! Maybe somebody from the festival should have told us. Oh well...

Even funnier, the film is playing a week from today - Saturday April 9th - and we've never heard Boo about a request for a screening copy or press or anything. They're probably using the DVD , but let this be a lesson to all, different festivals work in different ways and we all need to follow up on entries.

Congrats to Joe Mauceri on his second California screening and thanks to San Fernando Valley FF for having good taste.
