FEST - AMERICAN DELUXE WINS GRAND PRIZE AT PALM BEACH FF & MORE!

The Palm Beach International Film Festival smiled brightly on AMERICAN DELUXE this week. The Capstone short from Aaron Brownlee, won First Prize in festival's University level competition as well as the Grand Prize (whioch some of you might recall was won last year by Andrew Gay and his film LOVE IS DEAF). Aaron will get prizes galore, including a pitch session at Mandalay Pictures in L.A.

At the same event, UCF FILM grad student Danny Daneau also won the festival's award for Best Music Video for his epic work with local alt rockers, The Heathens.

AMERICAN DELUXE has also been selected for a very cool pilot program with NBC-Universal. An article in Variety explains the project. Based on his rejected submission to Slamdance, Aaron's film is one of 15 shorts that are being pitched to NBC Universal in a Fist Look deal. Check the link for details. It's a big deal.

Also on the festival front, Sean Heyborer's MY ESKIMO FRIEND Eskimo was accepted into the Montclair International Film Festival (Montclair New Jersey) while Brett Bonowicz's BASEBALL & GLORY will be screening as part of the 2007 Jacksonville Film Festival.

Fest News - Everyone Loves UCF FILM!

Festival acceptances continue for UCF FILM students, including some cool high profile screenings. Ben Piety tells us his Capstone short THE LONELY LIGHTS. THE COLOR OF LEMONS has been selected to play the prestigious Los Angeles Film Festival. This news is a bit crazy as LAFF usually wants world premieres and LONLEY LIGHTS has played AFI and SXSW. But the programmers loved it, so in it goes!

Rules are meant to be bent, huh?

The collective Dastoli Digital says they will be screening at the Tribeca Film Festival next week. "We're are one (that makes each of us a half) of 5 finalists in the MTVu Best Filmmaker on Campus competition and they are going to screen Southwestern Orange County vs. the Flying Saucers next Thursday night at the festival. We'll be going out there, but don't worry, they're going to fly us back before that lovely Capstone screening that we had hoped to find an excuse to miss."

I suggest the Dastoli boys make sure the MTVu prize pack is all MTV promised. I found their pledge of $$$ changed to a bag of MTVu schwag for the video game I helped to make that won an MTVu contest. Come to think of it, I never even got any of the schwag either!

Andrew Gay tells us his recently color-corrected Capstone short Melissa With A Heart Around It has earned acceptances at three festivals: the Indie Film Jam (Orlando), Seattle True Independent Film Festival and the San Francisco International GLBT Film Festival.

Also playing at the Indie Film Jam, Danny Daneau's music video for the The Heathens.

Fest - More Acceptances

First up, BASEBALL AND GLORY, directed by Brett Bonowicz ('07), is to be screened at our second Wildsound FEEDBACK Film Festival, in Toronto, on Tuesday May 15th. This fest is somewhat unusual in that a Q&A is held after each screening and the audience disucssion about each film is sent to the filmmakers. Will they be honest? Find out later...

A little closer to home, three UCF shorts have been accepted for screening at the 2007 Indie Film Jam, which happens in downtown Orlando as part of the Florida Music Festival. The films playing THE LONELY LIGHTS, THE COLOR OF LEMONS (Ben Piety), SIX-FIFTY PM AT THE USED BOOKSTORE (Matt Acevedo) and SOCIAL EXPERIMENTS WITH SIMON SNOW (Maria Pennington). The films will screen as part of a juried competition, which last year was won by another UCF film, MR MALIKAI BATTLES THE AEROPLANE.

Fest Updates

Some interesting news on the fest front - Ben Piety tells us his Capstone short THE LOINELY LIGHTS. THE COLOR OF LEMONS has been invited to screen at the Antelope Valley International Film Festival. The programmers saw the short at SXSW.

Sez Ben, "I met them on the bus back from a documentary called ZOO (you should see ASAP) and after some discussion remembered that they had seen me at a Q/A for Lonely Lights. I gave them a disk/screener of the film which also included other Fantacine works (Drew Blatman's Mr. Malakai and David Estrada's Tears In The Rain) and they are also going to program Malakai. Pretty exciting as they fly you out and put you up for the weekend. "

At the upcoming Sarasota Film festival (quite an excellent event, I might add), two UCF Grad students will be screening. Erin Kitzinger will be playing her Directing 3 short, The Girl Who Couldn’t Dream while Danny Daneau screens his music video Dirty Jeans by local Alt Rock faves The Heathens.

Finally, Brett Bonowicz's accidental (and excellent) short $358.20 (Like, Film Stock is Really Expensive), is screening this Sunday at the Enzian Filmslam. Come by if you're not doing anything and watch it on the big screen.
