A lot of emails have been filling my inbox lately, each one with blog-worthy news. So here's one big post with a bunch of news. Enjoy, folks.
On the alumni front, recent AFI graduate Aaron King (UCF '05), tells us his graduate thesis short, REDEMPTION MADDIE won Best Short and Best Actress at BendFilm, a fest which gives real, spenbding money to winners. Ka-Ching!
On the faculty front, professor Christopher Harris got word that the Avanto Festival in Helsinki, Finland will be screening his film, SUNSHINE STATE in their Avantoscope programme, curated by visual artist Sami van Ingen, which showcases a variety of experimental film and video works from 2005 to 2007. From more than 300 candidates, eight works were selected for the program. The festival runs from November 16th to 18th.
The sometimes cranky but always loveable kids of Dastoli Digital tell us they've just released a teaser trailer for their first feature film, Who Stole the Electric Car? We have not started production yet, but to jump start the pre-production process, we made this trailer, which can be downloaded at electriccar.dastolidigital.com. The film is written by Diego and Alejandro Kontarovsky and will star Carl Fieler and Chris Shields. Brett Bonowicz is on board as Exec. Producer.
On the media frontier, Maria DeVera, a UCF journalism student, wrote an article about UCF FILM, our new stage at downtown and our grad students. You can find it here.

Can This Blog Do Anything For You?
Often, we post job opportunities on this blog. I usually wonder if anyone responds. It turns out Shannon B. did. She answered the Writers Wanted ad from boxoffice.com and is presently covering the ShowEast Convention. Look, she even got a badge!

Shannon writes: ShowEast started today, and it's really incredible so far. Wanted to share a shot of me with my press badge and the mag that hired me (via the film blog, thank you.)
My "Live from ShowEast" blog should be up on boxoffice.com starting tomorrow. I'm getting access to all sorts of cool things like playing with Sony's new 4k digital projector (which is amazing, let me tell you), and advance screenings of holiday releaseslike Enchanted, Atonement, and my personal favorite, Run, Fatboy, Run.
They seem to be paying me to do this. I'm not going to ask questions. Also, I think I saw John Cusack in the hotel Starbucks.

WOW! Free Screenplay / Breakdown / Rip-o-Matic / Scheduling Software!
A student in my Foundations of Production class just turned me on to a wonderful new piece of FREE software called Celtex, available for Mac, Windows and Linux. From what I've seen in the demos, this single piece of software can handle the screenplay functions of Final Draft, storyboarding, rip-o-matic organization, most script breakdown functions (usually done manually) and basic scheduling. It also has a free web component which allows users to upload their whole package so others can share and collaborate on it. It's rather amazing that so much has been jammed into one clean little application. At the moment, I don't think this can handle all the depth and functionality of EP Budget and Schedule, but for smaller projects, it's probably all that's needed. Quite impressive. Download a copy and check it out.
