In Remembrance of Mary C. Johnson



Mary C. Johnson, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Film Department, died on Thursday, November 25, 2010 after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Johnson received both her masters degree in English education and her Ph.D. in film studies and English education from Ohio State University. She joined the University of Central Florida faculty in 1991 after teaching at Florida State University. She spent a number of summers teaching at Holllins University as a Visiting Associate Professor. Dr. Johnson was a beloved teacher concerned with critical and creative writing skills of middle school and secondary school students as well as honing the script writing skills of undergraduate and graduate students. She worked closely with students who often sought her advice and critiques long after they graduated. She chaired 3 MFA committees and worked diligently to create an award for best undergraduate screenplay. She worked extensively as Chair of curriculum committees developing both the undergraduate and MFA programs.

Good News From Former UCF FIlm Documentary Students

UCF Film Alums and former documentary students are reporting great successes out in the field. Corey Frost and Presley Adamson have both been making strides post UCF FIlm.

Presley Adamson's film "The Best Available Silence" has just won the prestigious CINE Golden Eagle Award, which is given in excellence of professional, independent, and student filmmaking. Presley's film is now up for the CINE Award of Excellence which is given to the top student film of the year. FInd out more about the CINE awards here.

Corey Frost had a hand in making a commercial for the NFL that is airing nationwide. Corey served as an intern/assistant editor for NFL's Play 60 campaign. It's currently airing online and national TV. The NFL Play 60 campaign encourages the development of physical fitness for young people. The idea is to spend 60 minutes a day doing some sort of fun, physical activity.

UCF Student Films to Compete in Enzian's Brouhaha Fest


Student and Local Filmmakers compete to showcase in Florida Film Festival 
Brouhaha Film Event Catapults Winners into International Film Festival 


ENZIAN announced today the short film lineup for the 19th annual Brouhaha Film and Video Showcase, an event sponsored by Full Sail University that awards winners a place in the 20th annual Florida Film Festival. Brouhaha will take place Dec. 4 and 5, 2010 at 11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.

Winners are selected by a three-member jury and will feature in a “Best of Brouhaha” program in the Florida Film Festival, taking place April 8 through 17, 2011. Jury members are Sheena Carlisle, Technology and Entertainment Coordinator, Metro Orlando Film Commission; Tim Anderson, Co-Producer/Co-Host, TV’s Indie Cinema Showcase and Robin Wright, President, Women in Film & Television - Florida.

Brouhaha is the premier outlet for Florida produced films and videos, and features eight FilmSlam winners along with several accepted works produced by student filmmakers from statewide high schools and colleges. This year’s lineup includes three from Dr. Phillips High School, five from Full Sail University, four from the University of Central Florida, 11 from Florida State University, 11 from Ringling College of Art and Design, and work from six other Florida schools.

The 49 selected films will be screened in four different programs over two days. Each program is $5 and free for members of the Enzian Film Society. Tickets can be purchased online at Enzian.org, at the Enzian Box Office, or by calling (407) 629-1088.

The Palm Beach International Film Festival (PBIFF), in collaboration with the Palm Beach County Film & Television Commission, is pleased to announce the official Call for Entries for the 2011 Student Showcase of Films (SSOF). Film students enrolled in Florida high schools and colleges are encouraged to submit their entries online no later thanTuesday, February 1, 2011. Celebrating more than 15 years, the highly acclaimed festival is the largest statewide film competition and awards ceremony for Florida student filmmakers. The juried competition recognizes outstanding high school and college students by presenting over $10,000 in scholarships and awards in six film categories: Feature/Shorts, Documentary, Animation, Commercial/PSA, Music Video, and Audience Award, in addition to screenwriting and poster competitions. Honoring the legacy of Burt Reynolds, the festival also awards an annual scholarship bearing his name, plus a Sara Fuller Student Scholarship through Film Florida.

Each year, the submitted student films are judged by top industry professionals and competition finalists are honored at a sizzling live awards show for more than 800 attendees from around the state. Past guests have included such notables as Steven Bauer, Amanda Bynes, Vincent Cecere, Clint Howard, Jonathan Krane, Louis Lombardi, Vincent Pastore, Burt Reynolds, Al Sapienza, Tico Torres and Nick Zano. Winning student films will also be screened in their entirety at the students’ own premiere during the film festival.

Microbudget Local Film Seeking Volunteers

From UCF FIlm graduate Alex Wolfe is currently shooting his first feature film here in Orlando and he is looking for a few volunteers to help crew.

The project is a micro budget feature film, tentatively titled "Terrestrial Soup". It is a satire about communication which follows several people as they react to news of an extra terrestrial signal being detected. The next production date is Saturday the 13th.  End date is Dec 5th.

Positions available are Script Supervisor, Sound Operator, and Production Assistant. Shooting is in the Orlando area.

MFA Student Chase Connor Generating Buzz Over His Project, "Less Lost"

While fundraising for his feature film "Less Loss", UCF Film MFA student Chase Conner is getting some help from a new company called Kickstarter, who assist artists and entrepreneurs alike in raising funds for their projects.

Chase's project was recently mentioned in an article appearing on Go386.com. Earlier this fall the same Voulusia county news website featured a piece with a more in-depth look at Chase and his film. Read that article here.

UCF Film's Ula Stöckl to Host Post "Metropolis" Screening at Enzian

Ula Stöckl, acclaimed German female filmmaker and current UCF film professor, will moderate a post-METROPOLIS screening discussion at Eden Bar. Enzian will be the exclusive theater in Central Florida to screen the 2010 reissue of METROPOLIS, which features 25 minutes of newly-discovered footage as well as Gottfried Huppertz’s magnificent original score.

UCF Film Alum Kristen Baker's short film Monsieur Tall & Stella was successful on the festival circuit in 2008, and most recently she produced the micro-budget UCF MFA feature "The Miseducation of Simon Kraus." Kristen was recently interviewed by Movie Scope Magazine.

JUNE 26-JULY 30TH (dates may change slightly)

OPEN TO ANY UCF JUNIOR OR SENIOR OR MATURE STUDENT

Steps to Enroll:

1. FIRST meet with advisor Kia Hollingsworth, Film Dept., room 121, School of Communication. Bring your audit sheet and she will tell you if you can use the UCLA credits towards your degree requirements.


2. Students must register for UCLA courses Film l94-l95 (2 or 6 credits) approximately: $800 (can be done on line)
REGISTRATION BEGINS MARCH 1ST:
Instructor: Ben Harris
UCF & UCLA will provide a list of internships.


3. If you pass step #1 and step #2, make an appointment with Prof. Jones, 407-823-3309, room 219, and bring your resume with you.



To stay on UCLA CAMPUS: approximately $1600 for a 15 meal a week plan: triple dorm room. Costs with plane ticket: approximately $3000 



Prof. Jones will be the Coordinator of the Program. Prior to the summer experience students must meet with Prof. Jones for advising and additional information. Students must submit a written 3-5 page report detailing their internship experiences to Prof. Jones before receiving UCF credit.



STUDENTS MUST ALSO HAVE UCLA FORWARD THEIR TRANSCRIPTS TO UCF IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDIT.

“Cinematography IS”

Cinematography can be defined simply as the art and technology of Motion Picture Photography. The art is visualizing what the Director wants to show and then composing, creating and painting the scene. The technology is choosing the camera, lenses, lighting equipment and coordinating the film and lighting crew. Join us as we discuss with local cinematographers and directors this creative process and relationship involving CINEMATOGRAPHY.
