Foreign Film Club Presents "The Agronomist"

FOREIGN FILM CLUB PRESENTS:

The Agronomist, a film by Jonathan Demme

A magnificent documentary about the life of Jean Dominique, a Haitian radio broadcaster who was, until his murder in 2000, a brave and tireless voice for democracy and human rights in that unlucky country. In part, the film is a chronicle of that bad luck, as Haiti alternates between chaos and authoritarianism, with glimmers of hope quickly giving way to compromise, corruption and violence. Jonathan Demme interviewed Mr. Dominiq...ue and his wife, Michelle Mortas, many times over the years, both in Haiti and during periods of exile in New York, and these conversations, along with Wyclef Jean's bubbling score, give "The Agronomist" a lively immediacy unusual in documentaries of its kind. By the end, you come not simply to admire Dominique; you want to count yourself, as Mr. Demme clearly does, among his friends. Unfortunately, you will also have a clear sense of his enemies, the gangsters and strongmen who have run Haiti, usually with American support, for most of its modern history.
— A. O. Scott

Help Send Jeph to SXSW, Get Emails, Tickets and Tea!

Jeph Alexander, a film student at the University of Central Florida and Marketing Assistant at Enzian Theater and the Florida Film Festival, is holding an online fundraiser with a goal of $1,300 to help cover the expenses associated with attending South By Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in Austin, TX. Jeph is attending SXSW from March 9-15. All funds raised will reimburse the cost of the plane ticket, hotel room, and SXSW industry badge.

His fundraiser is hosted on the crowd-funding website IndieGoGo as an “education” listing. Perks for donations are comprised of ticket vouchers for Enzian Theater, central Florida’s only non-profit, art-house cinema, ticket vouchers for the 20th annual Florida Film Festival (April 8-17), and $10 gift cards to Dandelion CommuniTea Café, a vegetarian restaurant in downtown Orlando. Jeph is also offering communication via e-mail during and after the festival with the promise that donors will “feel as if they were at SXSW with me”.

Jeph hopes that the success of his campaign will result in three things: (1) To allow Jeph to fully experience an “industry” film festival in a way that will open more opportunities in the future. (2) To inspire artists of various mediums to rely on their community to make their creative and professional endeavors a reality, no matter what resources are required. (3) That the support given by Enzian, Florida Film Festival and Dandelion CommuniTea Café to his campaign will be an example for local businesses and organizations of how their contributions, no matter how small, can help engage the community in a productive, cooperative environment.
