Foreign Film Club

Foreign Film Club proudly presents:

The Double Life of Véronique, a film by Krzysztof Kieślowski

About the the film:

Krzysztof Kieślowski’s international breakthrough remains one of his most beloved films, a ravishing, mysterious rumination on identity, love, and human intuition. Irène Jacob is incandescent as both Weronika, a Polish choir soprano, and her double, Véronique, a French music teacher. Though unknown to each other, the two women share an enigmatic, emotional bond, which Kieślowski details in gorgeous reflections, colors, and movements. Aided by Slawomir Idziak’s shimmering cinematography and Zbigniew Preisner’s haunting, operatic score, Kieślowski creates one of cinema’s most purely metaphysical works. The Double Life of Véronique is an unforgettable symphony of feeling.
-Criterion Collection

A film such as this, worthy of several viewings will be fittingly presented in High Definition picture and sound.

When: This Friday, February 25th, 2011 @ 6:00 PM

Dr. Mills' Latest Project to Recieve National Award

A documentary film made by Dr. Lisa Mills, Dr. Robert Cassanello, and their Spring 2010 Honors Advanced Documentary Workshop class will receive a national award in April.

Shadows of the Past, Reflections for the Future will receive an Award of Excellence at the prestigious Festival of Media Arts in Las Vegas. Judges in the competition gave the film a score of 98.8. The film profiles three people who promote the legacy of Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore, the only married couple killed in the fight for civil rights. The Moores were Central Florida teachers who fought for the voting rights of Blacks before the official start of the civil rights era. They were killed when their Brevard County home was bombed by the KKK on Christmas Day, 1951. The film may be viewed in its entirety at the Web site of the Regional Initiative to Collect the History, Experiences, and Stories of Central Florida.

 Kay Yoder is the Executive Director of a grassroots nonprofit organization located in the Sarasota-Bradenton area. She is looking for a talented film student to produce a 5 minute impact video depicting her organization's work in Africa through U.S. youth involvement and is hoping that UCF Film students might be interested. The video will be used during concerts on college campuses (see www.rockoutforacause.com for more info regarding the event) as a way to create awareness regarding global issues and incite youth involvement with their cause.

This is a wonderful opportunity to put creativity to work and produce a film that has the potential to be seen by college students throughout the country. Footage of Africa and past concerts are available for use in the video. As a small nonprofit, money is tight, however they are able to pay $300 for the project, with a completion date of no later than March 15th.

DART Now Accepting Applications

The Direct Action & Research Training (DART) Center will be on the UCF campus on Tuesday, February 22 at 6:30pm in CSEL Room 115 (on Memory Mall) to discuss careers in the field of community organizing with students interested in empowering their communities and working for social change.

Please RSVP if you are interested by contacting Hannah Wittmer at hannah@thedartcenter.org or calling 785.841.2680 with your name, phone #, email address and year in school.

After years of research into best practices, experimentation, evaluation, and refinement, the Organizers Institute has become THE elite field school in the training of grassroots community organizers in the country.

DART is now accepting applications for the 2011 DART Organizers Institute, the paid, four-month field school for people interested in launching a career in community organizing. Participants will undergo a combined classroom and field training covering such topics as:

* Entering a community
* Identifying and training local leaders
* Strategic planning and issue cutting
* Relationship and community building
* Direct Action on community issues
* Fundraising

The DART Center, has built coalitions throughout the country that have won important victories on a broad set of justice issues including:

* Education reform in low-performing public schools
* Job Training
* Drugs and Violence
* Criminal Recidivism
* Living Wage
* Neighborhood Revitalization
* Predatory Lending
* Affordable Housing, etc.

The DART Organizers Institute combines a 7-day classroom orientation with 15 weeks of infield training at a local grassroots organization and in-field training site. Organizer Trainees are provided with a cost of living stipend and travel. Room, board, and tuition will also be paid by DART during the seven-day classroom training. After successful completion of the program, DART will place graduates into permanent full-time salaried positions earning $30,000-$35,000/year + benefits. DART is a 501(c)(3) organization, therefore, employees of the DART Network are eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness under the recently enacted College Cost Reduction and Access Act.

The 7-day classroom orientation and 15-week infield training start in July 2011. Training locations will include placements in several states around the country.

Although it may be helpful, no direct experience is necessary. Organizer Trainees (OTs) hired to participate in the DART Organizers Institute must demonstrate a desire to pursue community organizing as a long-term professional career. A master's degree, JD, or similar life experience is preferred though not necessary. Candidates must have a college degree or be graduating prior to July 2011. Also, candidates must display a workmanlike diligence, be driven to produce sustained results, have proven capacity to build relationships of trust, create and execute a plan, act professionally, feel comfortable working with religious institutions, be accountable and willing to hold others accountable, demonstrate disciplined thought and action, and work in a team setting. OTs must also have access to a car during their training and be flexible regarding relocation. Fluency in Spanish/English is a plus and people of color are encouraged to apply.

Low-moderate income communities across the country are feeling the bite of the recession that began in December 2007. Cutbacks in human services and education, layoffs and persistent unemployment, home foreclosures, increased youth violence, predatory lending, and other serious issues are day-to-day realities for many. Now is the time for a new generation of community organizers to step up, unite people, and transform our communities. DART is recruiting and training that new generation.

To find out more about DART or to apply, we encourage you to contact Hannah Wittmer at hannah@thedartcenter.org or (785) 841-2680. You can download applications or view profiles from previous OTs at the DART website: www.thedartcenter.org.

Foreign Film Club Presents "35 Shots of Rum"

FOREIGN FILM CLUB PRESENTS:

35 Shots of Rum, a film by Claire Denis

A wonderfully executed and poetic film by Claire Denis called 35 Shots of Rum made me an instant fan of Claire Denis although I'm still exploring more of her work. 35 Shots of Rum beautifully photographed by Agnes Godard (making me an instant cinematographic admirer) and directed by Claire Denis focuses on the deep relationship of a father and daughter similar to The Ballad of Jack and Rose without the incestuous undertones. Alex Descas who performs as Lionel and Mati Diop who is Josephine share a dependent love for each other as father and daughter. The film follows the lives of the two in an atmospheric and subtle way in which there are many quiet moments letting the narrative breathe without any sharp dramatic interruptions. The film is reminiscent of Japanese cinema master, Yasujiro Ozu's familial dramas. Everything in the film happens in a seemingly natural pace exposing the normal lives of Lionel and Josephine in magnificent cinematic compositions.

Film Club Spielberg Running Man Trilogy!

Join UCF Film Club at noon next Saturday, February 12th in Comm 145 as we present the Spielberg Running Man Trilogy!

12:00 - 3:00 A.I. Artificial Intelligence
3:00 - 6:00 Minority Report
6:00 - 9:00 Catch Me if You Can

Steven Spielberg can arguably...or unarguably...be described as the most well-known living director of the past 50 years. His populist, polished style of filmmaking has led his name to become synonymous with box office success and near-universal critical acclaim from the mainstream press. For nearly 40 years, he astounded audiences with his popcorn entertainment that explored themes of loss, wonder, and faith. And yet, despite this universal acclaim, Spielberg often gets over looked or neglected in both film school and academic environments. Love him or hate him, perhaps it is time we analyze what made this particular director so deeply ingrained in the popular, mainstream imagination.

UCF Film Club will attempt to do so by showcasing Spielberg's RUNNING MAN TRILOGY (AI, Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can) an unofficial collection of three of his films united by the common theme of protagonists on the run from an unrelenting pursuer. This trilogy of films marks a special transitional period in which Spielberg walks away from both his Oscar bait films and polished blockbusters for a much more darker, cynical, and yet a more paradoxically hopeful view of the world.

UCF Film Associate Professor Tony Major's Play Featured at the Seminole State's Fine Art Theatre

UCF Film Associate Professor Tony Major is directing a play at the Seminole State College's Fine Arts Theatre. HIs play "Seven Guitars" has been running for a week and has been met with rave reviews. Matthew J. Palm of the Orlando Sentinel wrote "Director Anthony Major keeps the story grounded; no soap opera here, just ordinary people doing the best they can but always dreaming about more."

“Seven Guitars” represents August Wilson’s 1940s chronicle of African-American life in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pa. This tragicomedy, directed by Tony Major, centers on seven characters, three of whom are professional musicians who have gathered for a wake after the funeral of their friend Floyd Barton. Through flashbacks, the audience learns the events of the past week that led to Floyd’s death.

There is still time to catch a show!
Feb. 3, 4 and 5 begin at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday matinees on Jan. 30 and Feb. 6 begin at 2 p.m.
