"Florida's Purge: The Johns Committee Witch Hunt" - Short Documentary Premiere
Tuesday, December 6, 2011; 5:30 PM
Campus Location: Morgridge International Reading Center (Behind the Teaching Academy) at the UCF Main Campus
The Burnett Honors College Advanced Documentary Filmmaking Workshop class of Fall 2011 presents the first free public screening of a new documentary about a dark chapter in Florida history. Written, directed and produced by a team of students from a variety of majors (including several UCF Film students),
Florida's Purge: The Johns Committee Witch Hunt investigates the past civil rights violations of a legislative investigation committee that operated in the late 1950's and early 60's. The Johns Committee, named after politician Charley Johns, existed for the purpose of finding gay and lesbian educators in the Florida public university system in order to revoke their teaching credentials as well as interrogating students targeted for potentially being GLBTQ.
Over the course of the semester the Doc workshop team raised funding, conducted research, and traveled all over Florida. They were able to interview Committee interrogation survivors, academic experts on the subject, politicians, authors, and, most importantly, modern-day educators that have found a much more accepting environment. A poignant, informative, and fascinating look at GLBTQ issues in Florida both past and present, Florida's Purge: The Johns Committee Witch Hunt is a must-see for anyone interested in equality, Florida history, or documentary filmmaking.
