The Tailor's Apprentice

The Tailor's Apprentice, a feature length dramatic-thriller about a Jewish family living in South Philadelphia, recently finished shooting its promotional scene on Sunday, April 15th. Written and directed by UCF Film MFA student Jeff Lehman, this narrative feature will begin its principal photography on May 26th, shooting in both Central Florida and South Philadelphia.
The Tailor's Apprentice was originally inspired by the true events of young hasidic Jewish men who smuggled ecstasy into the United States.  We follow Helick, owner of a tailor shop with hopes of passing on the family trade to his son. Using religion as a tool to hide from himself, Helick pushes his children away with his over controlling tendencies and neglects to show them love and care.  His son Dovid, runs away in an attempt to prove his independence but puts himself in mortal danger.

The Short Film Channel accepts all genres of film, including narratives, comedies, documentaries, horror and experimental. Once submitted, all films will be reviewed by a panel of judges. Those films determined to be of the highest quality and craftsmanship will be broadcast. A panel of experienced producers, actors, directors and filmmakers themselves will then review the best in the contest to determine the winner among the films submitted. We have 23 current judges including:

Director/Producer DAVID ZUCKER, WILL BIGHAM,  Documentary Channel Founder TOM NEFF, Cinematographer Steven Douglas Smith,  Actress Kelly Washington, Producer Magnus Kaberg, Country Idol Judge Anastasia Brown, Filmaking Student David Lawrence,  Director David Mackay, and Actor Odessa Rae.

DOCUMENTARY FILM MADE BY HONORS STUDENTS RECEIVES ACCOLADES

A short documentary produced by the Fall 2011 Honors Advanced Documentary Workshop received first place for the College of Arts and Humanities at the Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence.  Logan Kirete, Monica Monticello and Amy Simpson included The Committee in their research poster presentation on April 5th in the Pegasus Ballroom, surrounded by hundreds of posters about everything from microbiology to psychology and everything in-between.  The award came with a check for $600.

“This is a great example of how creative activity is being recognized as research by the university,” said Dr. Lisa Mills, co-teacher of the class.  “We are very pleased the UCF community realizes that it takes a lot of creative work and serious research to complete a documentary or any other kind of film.”

Job Opportunities From U.S. PUBLIC INTEREST RESEARCH GROUP

From U.S. PUBLIC INTEREST RESEARCH GROUP: (PIRG)

Hello,

As a graduating senior, you are no doubt trying to decide what you will do
next year, or even for the next 5 years. Consider a job with U.S.PIRG.
www.uspirg.org/jobs

When I was getting ready to graduate from college I knew I wanted to do
something to make the world a better place but I didn't know what kind of
job or career would enable me to make the biggest impact. When I heard about
U.S.PIRG and how they tackle our country's biggest problems by mobilizing
millions of people across the country, I was excited. As a campus organizer
in my first year in 2008 I worked with more than 50 interns to register
young voters for the 2008 Presidential Election. Together we registered more
than 1600 students to vote and increased youth voter turn out by more than
400% in our district.

The deadline to apply for our 2012-2013 positions is Friday April 27th.
Apply at www.uspirg.org/jobs

If you're like me, you look around and see too many problems in our country
to sit back and do nothing. With U.S. PIRG, you can actually get paid to
take on and solve the problems our country faces; from advocating for
policies that will make sure that the food we eat and the water we drink are
safe and free of toxic chemicals, to researching the solutions to
challenging issues, like balancing the federal budget (our staff found ways
the debt commission could save $2 trillion!)

U.S.PIRG is a federation of state-based public interest advocacy group. And
working together we have a much greater opportunity to actually make a
difference. U.S.PIRG has a 25-year track record of organizing on these
issues, and we're hiring over 100 graduating seniors to jump right in and
make a critical impact as a campus organizer or in our fellowship program.
